Born and raised in Manhattan, Amanda BernSohn began studying photography as a young teenager at the International Center of Photography. She continued on with classes at ICP, School of Visual Arts, and Smith College while completing her undergraduate degree in Urban Studies and Social Psychology. She holds a Master’s from NYU/Tisch in Interactive Media Arts where her graduate work included photography, video, physical computing, wearables and assistive technology projects. BernSohn lives in Brooklyn with her partner and children, who are the fifth generation of New Yorkers in their family.
To me, this work is work of self-preservation. Most of those in my work are people I love; my friends, my partner, my son and daughter, and for that one moment my light, shadow and night. Intimacy, interdependence, trust, light, glints, breath. It's when I'm seeing that I feel most seen.
